Most of the country had been suffering under a drought, which had begun the previous year. The hot, arid conditions cut yields but also concentrated the surviving grapes. The heat also kept the grapes relatively clean and disease-free. Some grapes like Tempranillo suffered in the heat, eroding the essential acidity, and grapes in the moderately cooler regions tended to perform better.
